She always did, in the quiet hours before the day swallowed her whole. He had walked through the training yard last week, hands clasped behind his back, watching the recruits drill with an expression so still it could have been carved from stone. Masha had felt the weight of his gaze the way one feels cold air pressing against a windowpane—distant, total, indifferent to whether you were watching back. "You're staring at that rifle like it owes you money," a voice said from the doorway. Masha didn't turn. "It's the only thing in this place that doesn't ask me to be someone I'm not."

The soldier in the doorway shifted his weight, said nothing. He didn't need to. In the Ravkan Military, silence was its own kind of answer, and Masha had learned long ago to read it. Roll call came.
