Lore & Background

Lyon has been active in the network security community since the mid-1990s. His handle, "Fyodor", was taken from Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Most of his programming is done in the C, C++, and Perl programming languages. In December 2011, Lyon published a post criticizing Download.com for bundling grayware with their installation managers, expressing concerns that users might confuse Download.com-offered content for software offered by original authors; he accused them of using deception as well as copyright and trademark violation.

In Their Own Story

Lyon has presented at DEFCON, CanSecWest, FOSDEM, IT Security World, Security Masters' Dojo, ShmooCon, IT-Defense, SFOBug, and other security conferences. He maintains several network security web sites: Nmap.Org (host of the Nmap security scanner and its documentation), SecTools.Org (the top 100 network security tools ranked by thousands of Nmap users), SecLists.Org (archive of the most common security mailing lists), and Insecure.Org (his main site, offering security news/updates, exploit world archive, and other misc. security resources).

Reader's Guide

Lyon has co-authored several published books. 'Know Your Enemy: Revealing the Security Tools, Tactics, and Motives of the Blackhat Community' was co-authored with other members of the Honeynet Project. 'Stealing the Network: How to Own a Continent' was co-authored with Kevin Mitnick and other hackers. He also authored 'Nmap Network Scanning'. He is also a member of the W00w00 group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who wields Fyodor's Earth?

This power is controlled by Fyodor Diomir, a former Ravkan Zemni who joined General Kirigan's Second Army. He serves as a key combatant using his unique connection to the ground.

What are the specific abilities of this magic?

Unlike precise Earth Shapers, Fyodor commands seismic forces to crush and swallow enemies whole. The terrain itself becomes an aggressive weapon under his direct control during battles.

When does he make his first appearance?

Fyodor is introduced during the Siege of Keramzin in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. His presence marks a significant threat to the defenders at that location.

How does Fyodor's story conclude?

He meets his end before the war concludes, resulting in his status as deceased. This removes him from Kirigan's roster of Grisha assets permanently.

Why is this artifact or magic important to fans?

It highlights a chaotic variation of Zemni power that prioritizes destruction over utility. Readers often cite it when discussing the darker aspects of Grisha warfare under the Darkling.
